Shenzhen plans to ban all non-electric vehicles from signing up with car-hailing platforms in August.

The municipality will also conduct a survey to collect the new policy's influence on the industry.

According to the city transportation committee's statement, the 7,500 city tour taxis will be replaced by electric vehicles before December 31.

The city will build more than 5,200 sets of charging piles for taxis, and 5,000 sets of fast charging piles in residential areas.

The statement also says the operating permit of nearly 20,000 online hailing cars will expire before December 31, 2020, which means some non-electric cars will have to leave by then.

The survey is designed to gather the views of citizens, taxi drivers and online hailing car drivers towards the new policy and reduce the impact on public transportation use.

As the world’s first city with an all-electric bus fleet, Shenzhen is continuing its ‘Shenzhen Blue’ sustainable development plan to weed out fossil-fuel vehicles. The city is leading the global trend and is aiming for a comprehensive overhaul.
