BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- It is an impossible task to contain China, a Chinese military spokesperson said Thursday.

Wu Qian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the remarks at a press conference in response to a media query on the military relations between China and the United States during and after the Trump administration.

China-US relations experienced severe difficulties during the Trump administration, with the military ties between the two sides facing numerous risks and challenges, Wu noted.

"Facts have proven that to contain China is a mission impossible and will only end up shooting oneself in the foot," Wu said.

Wu called on the new US administration to work with the Chinese side, in the spirit of non-conflict, non-confrontation, mutual respect and win-win cooperation, to strengthen dialogue, focus on cooperation, and manage and control divergences, so as to promote the sound and steady development of bilateral ties.

At the beginning of the year, the two militaries carried out practical exchanges on several occasions, Wu said, noting that the two sides held a video-based work meeting on searching for the remains of American war captives and missing persons on Jan. 26 and 27, which demonstrated the importance China attaches to the humanitarian concerns of the US side.

Wu called on the United States to work with China toward the same goal, properly address China's concerns related to bilateral military ties, and push their military relations forward along the right track.
