Beijing urged Washington to immediately stop smearing and slandering China and stop interfering in the country’s internal affairs, a top Chinese diplomat told the United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over a phone call on Saturday.

China firmly opposes and condemns the US officials’ repeated distorted remarks attacking China’s political system as well as its domestic and foreign policies, and its two bills regarding Hong Kong and Xinjiang, said Yang Jiechi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The US recently pushed into law the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019, and the US House of Representatives passed the Xinjiang Human Rights Policy Act of 2019 earlier this week.

Yang, also director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, stressed that such moves grossly violated China’s domestic affairs as well as the international law and basic rules governing international relations.

The moves are also against the will of the two peoples as well as the international community, Yang said.

No one should expect China to swallow the pains of compromising its interests, he said.

China will firmly safeguard its national sovereignty, security and development interests, he said, urging the US to clearly understand the situation and correct its mistakes.
