He Jiankui, a researcher of the Southern University of Science and Technology, claimed on Monday that he and his team altered the genes of a pair of twin girls born this month to make them HIV-resistant, using a tool known as CRISPR-cas9, which has sparked a great outcry on the internet and drawn outrage from experts worldwide.

He personally has eight registered companies, one of which has cooperation with Harmonicare Medical Holdings Ltd, thepaper.cn reported.

China's National Health Commission said it had “immediately requested the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission seriously investigate and verify” the claims made by He, according to a statement posted on its website on Monday.

A total of 122 Chinese scientists and experts issued a joint statement on Chinese social media on Monday, condemning He’s gene-edited research.
