Underground power transmission celebrates section completion

Workers and engineers in Changshu, East China's Jiangsu Province, celebrate the completion of the Nantong section of the world's first ever ultra-high voltage gas insulated underground power line (GIL) on Tuesday. (Photos: VCG)

The pipe stretches across 5.47 kilometers, with the upper layer carrying a high-performance 1,000-kilovolt line and the lower layer containing a 500-kilovolt cable.

The whole project connecting Jiangsu's Nantong and Suzhou will be completed in 2019.
