A poll showed that US democracy has a long list of problems and what the US should do is care more about its own people's feelings instead of imposing the so-called "democratic model" on others with a superior arrogance and prejudice, said China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Tuesday.

Zhao made the remarks at a regular press briefing in response to a poll which showed that 36 percent of the American people believe that US democracy is in crisis, 50 percent believe it faces serious challenges, 75 percent believe the US political system has become more divisive and 71 percent believe ordinary people should have more of a voice.

"That is what they call 'democracy,'" Zhao said. "Some American politicians always boost the 'beacon of democracy' image of the US, interfere in internal affairs of other countries under the guise of democracy and try their best to let their ideology infiltrate other countries."

Zhao stressed the US should care more about what its own people were thinking and feeling, and introspect, face up to and solve its own democracy problems.

The US was in no position to ally "small circles" against specific countries under the banner of democracy and “maliciously belittle or even demonize the social systems of other countries,” Zhao said.

The key measurement of a good political system was “whether the system can bring political stability, social progress and improvement in people’s lives, and whether it can gain the support and backing of the people,” he said.
