The United States’ new tariffs hearing imposed on Chinese goods has drawn increasing opposition, Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lu Kang said at a routine press briefing on Tuesday.

Lu said in response to recent reports saying that many US companies, including the American Apparel and Footwear Association, Qualcomm and Intel, are among the critics at a public tariff hearing on Chinese goods that started on Monday. A consulting firm estimated that the tariff plan would result in the loss of more than 2 million US jobs.

“I have noticed that there is an increasing number of opposition voices in the US standing against the tariffs while the US has held a tariff hearing on China,” said Lu.

Larry Kudlow, the director of the US National Economic Council, has acknowledged that the new tariffs imposed by the US will force its own companies and customers to pay the bill.

A recent Goldman Sachs report showed that the cost of tariffs imposed by the US on Chinese goods last year had fallen entirely on US businesses and households, and its impact on US prices was greater than expected.

For a long time, economic and trade investment cooperation based on mutual benefit and win-win cooperation has brought enormous benefits to the industry and consumers from both China and the US, said Lu.

History has proved that economic and trade differences between China and the US can be properly resolved through consultations, as long as it is based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. There is no way to proceed without this principle, Lu stressed.
