China’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday voiced firm opposition to US sanctions on Chinese enterprises and urged the US to stop making democracy in Venezuela an excuse to suppress Chinese companies.

“China supports Venezuela in choosing a suitable path to develop itself and has normal cooperation with Venezuela, which is in accordance with internationally-accepted trade rules and should not be politicized,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said in a daily media conference, adding that the US has been using the excuse of democracy to impose sanctions over relevant enterprises.

The spokesperson lashed out at US Treasury Department sanctions on China Electronics Import and Export Corporation (CEIEC) and said the US attempts to defame China with fabricated excuses.

“The legitimacy of the Venezuelan government shall not be determined by any third party. The Venezuelan government and people have the ability and wisdom to handle their own problems. We firmly oppose any unilateral sanctions and other means to coerce the Venezuelan people into changing their development path,” Hua said.

Hua also warned of possible countermeasures to safeguard China’s legitimate rights and the interests of its enterprises.
