For most international students in China, learning Mandarin is undoubtedly the first, as well as the most difficult, barrier to conquer. However, for ones with edacious stomachs, they learned their first Chinese from food service employees.

Itmum Momin, a graduate from the New York University Shanghai, said at his commencement ceremony recently that the first phrase he learned here in China is “你的外卖到了”, which means “Your food has arrived”.
