Xi, Modi visit World Heritage Site in India

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Mahabalipuram temples on Friday, after he arrived in the southern Indian city of Chennai in the afternoon.

Mahabalipuram is a town located close to Chennai in the state of Tamil Nadu, on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, which is renowned for the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, a collection of religious structures that can be dated back to the eighth century.

The monuments were included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The town of Mahabalipuram is also among the most visited towns of South India, which is now known as Mamallapuram.

President Xi arrived in Chennai for an informal meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. It is the second informal meeting between Xi and Modi, after the meeting in Wuhan in April last year.

It is also the first overseas trip of the Chinese president after the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Xi will pay a state visit to Nepal. It will be the first visit by a Chinese president to Nepal in 23 years.
