Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday visited the Chuanshan port area of the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, East China’s Zhejiang Province.

In China, over 90 percent of foreign trade goods are traded through ports. Xi’s visit to the world’s biggest port illustrates the key role of ports in the orderly resumption of work and production and stabilizing the supply chain amid the worldwide pandemic.

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port handled about 1.12 billion tons of cargo in 2019, ranking first in the world for 11 consecutive years. The container throughput of the port ranks third at 27.535 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit).

Under the impact of the pandemic, the port handled 163 million tons of cargo in the first two months of this year, which is 98 percent of the output in the same period last year.

As major changes have taken place in epidemic control and economic situations at home and abroad, China is taking measures to implement the resumption of work in industrial chains.

At a leadership meeting chaired by President Xi on March 27, Xi stressed that international cooperation should be strengthened to speed up the development of the international logistics supply system.

"China is facing the increasing pressure of imported cases as well as new challenges in terms of economic development, especially the industrial chain recovery," according to a statement released after the meeting.
