'My people, my country' is China's phrase of the year

BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese character "wen," meaning stability, has been chosen by Chinese netizens as the character of the year for 2019, and "my people, my country" as the phrase of the year.

The winners were chosen through an online poll featuring thousands of candidates recommended by internet users, said the Chinese National Language Monitoring and Research Center and the Commercial Press, also the co-organizers of the selection Friday.

The character "nan," or difficulty and the phrase "trade friction" were chosen as representatives of international affairs.

In addition to the 2019 Chinese characters and phrases chosen by netizens, the center also unveiled the top 10 media buzzwords and 10 internet slangs.

The media buzzwords include "nighttime economy," "epoch-making year for 5G," and "the year to alleviate burdens on primary-level authorities."

Among the top 10 online slangs of 2019 are "remain true to our original aspiration," "so happy," and "1.4 billion flag-bearers."
