Co-sponsored by China Media Group (CMG) and the People's Government of Hainan Province, the film festival is dedicated to strengthening international film and culture exchange and collaboration, promoting innovative development in the film industry, and fostering creativity in filmmaking.

The HIIFF has become an annual gala for filmmakers and actors globally. This year, a total of 3,761 films from 116 countries and regions were submitted for the Golden Coconut Awards, and a number of important awards were unveiled at the closing ceremony.

An Argentine film directed by Laura Citarella, "Trenque Lauquen," won the Best Picture award, followed by "After Sun," a drama film written and directed by Charlotte Wells, which won the Special Jury Prize. Shortlisted for this year's Golden Coconut Awards, the Chinese film "The Cord of Life" reaped the Best Artistic contribution.

The Best Director award went to French filmmaker Alice Diop for her film "Saint Omer," based on the 2016 French court case of Fabienne Kabou.

The Best Actor and Best Actress awards went to French actor Karim Leklou for the work "Goutte d'Or" and Vera Gemma for her performance in "Vera."
