Marvel's latest superhero movie "Ant-Man and the Wasp" premiered in China last Friday, topping box office charts.

It grossed 68 million US dollars during its three-day debut in China, accounting for a majority of its box office earnings over the weekend.

It opened as the fourth-highest debut for a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) release in China and the third-highest for a non-Chinese film so far this year, after "Avengers: Infinity Wars" and "Ready Player One."

"The timing is great for 'Ant-Man and the Wasp'. It's the only Hollywood blockbuster released last weekend," said Dai Yuzhu, manager of the Beijing UME International Cinema.

In this superhero sequel, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father in the aftermath of "Captain America: Civil War."

As he struggles to rebalance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he's confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission.

Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside The Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from their past.

Some industry experts say the movie's success is due to its humorous, down-to-Earth plot.

"I think this film is successful for a lot of reasons. First of all, it's a lot of fun. It's extremely well done on the technical level, It's funny and sharp and the action scenes are great. But what makes it unique is that this film is more relatable," said Brendan Davis, film producer, and director.

"There are a lot of family elements, and it's something a little more grounded in reality. So I think people can relate it better than superhero movies with people flying around the space," Davis added.

Marvel's blockbusters, which has included "Avengers 3" this year, have all done well at the Chinese box office.

"Superhero films are quite popular in China because they give us a chance to step out of ourselves and experience something we could not possibly do," said Davis.

And it's not just a box office success, the movie earned a 7.5-score on Douban, a leading aggregator for Chinese film reviews.

To date, worldwide earnings for the superhero sequel stands at 544 million US dollars.
