Rain Water, or Yushui in Chinese, is the second of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar, following the Start of Spring, or Lichun.
It starts on Sunday, or February 19, this year, and according to traditional beliefs, rainfall will be more frequent and temperatures will rise after a long winter.
Rain Water is when spring makes its comeback. In large swathes of China, the temperature increases to above zero degrees Celsius, so the solar term of Rain Water is an important period for farmers to prepare for timely irrigation.
As the famous Chinese saying goes, "Rain during the spring is as precious as oil," showcasing the importance of rain to plants and farming.
Married women in China traditionally visit their parents on the first day of Rain Water to express gratitude and wish them good health.
Though the days are getting warmer during this solar term, it is still a little bit early to take off your heavy coat, for the winter chill still lingers in the air.
