US wholesale giant Costco has recently obtained land in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area, which will be used for the company’s second shop in Mainland China, following the successful opening of its first store in Minhang district last August.
According to The Paper, the location of the new store is close to Kangqiao metro station, one stop on the way to Shanghai Disney Resort. Costco hasn't revealed any construction plans or the opening date at this stage.
Costco’s Minhang store enjoyed instant success, which even led to hours-long queues for parking and at the cashier. The managing team had to close the store in the afternoon of its opening day in response to huge crowds.
The shop recently also attracted criticism for its lack of measures to prevent large crowds during the COVID-19 outbreak. In response to the criticism, Costco pulled a few best-sellers off the shelves, shortened the opening hours and created a designated queuing area to keep customer traffic under 1,000 at any time, according to SHINE. Guess there'll be no croissants or roast chicken for now.
