China marks 2,577th anniversary of Confucius's birth

A ceremony marking the 2,577th anniversary of the birth of Confucius was held on Monday in Qufu, the philosopher’s hometown in east China’s Shandong Province.

Confucius (551-479 BC) was an influential educator and philosopher whose teachings became the foundation of Confucianism, shaping the Chinese society and thought for generations. He advocated teaching students regardless of their social background.

The tradition of commemorating Confucius began in 478 BC, a year after his death. Featuring ancient music, ceremonial dances and traditional rituals, today’s ceremony reflects the importance Confucian culture places on propriety and respect.

The 2026 China International Confucius Culture Festival and the 2026 Nishan Forum on World Civilizations also opened on Monday.
