China's National Day holiday has brought a busy week to cinemas. The holiday movie season ended on October 8 with 1.165 billion yuan (US $173 million) in total box-office revenue, according to movie-ticketing platform Maoyan.
The action thriller Traces of Justice led the lineup with 420 million yuan, followed by the comedy Mr. and Mrs. Pardon with 240 million yuan. The horror film Resident Evil: Outbreak Night, which opened on October 5, ranked third with 170 million yuan in just three days. The three films together took more than 70% of the holiday box office.
Beyond the box office, some cinemas used the holiday period to make moviegoing more accessible for older people. In Beijing, several venues introduced special screenings with adjustments made to the picture quality to make for more comfortable viewing. They also offered larger-print tickets and assistance inside the cinemas.
Several of the cinemas also offered half-price tickets to seniors during the holiday. These measures made it easier for older moviegoers to enjoy the National Day releases.
