Attitude and willingness to play for the country are two of the most important traits when selecting prospective players, Li Nan, who took over the helm of China's men's national basketball team in November, told Tencent Sports.

"The first thing I will consider is their attitude and will, which will matter a lot if they are playing for their country. I also hope they can bring what they have learnt with Team China back to their clubs. As for veteran players, I will pay more attention to whether they are still in their best conditions. I will make a long list but only a little more than a dozen will be shortlisted eventually," Li said in an interview during which he spoke of his vision for the team's future playing style.

"First you need to improve your own skills because any coach would like players with remarkable skills. Second, you need to know how to change your play based on who your teammate is. Never try to be someone else but always remember to play smart, especially when are not good enough in certain areas. You need to make what you are good at part of what the team are good at," said Li.

As to what style fits Team China, Li has already envisioned a plan.

"I hope our team can be combination of youngsters, players in their best time and veterans. I believe playing fast is the best choice. Without speed, no skill will help you. Team China must speed up and our goal is to makes sure that in a fast-pace game, everyone can do they excel and keep it under physical confrontations."
