SUVA, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fiji's Education Ministry has set its target to improve national results and achieve higher pass rates in this 2020 academic year.

With classes to start next Monday, the ministry has advised schools to analyze their 2019 provisional results and develop strategies for further improvement.

Education Minister Rosy Akbar said Tuesday that teachers and students needed to work as a unit to improve academic performance.

"If we look at the academic side of things, we would expect the schools to analyze their results and come up with strategies for improvements in the national results for 2020," she said.

Teachers are expected to be in school from Wednesday to prepare for the new academic term.

Akbar said teachers must adhere to the student-free days which required them to be in school three days prior to the start of classes for a new school year.

Akbar said the ministry was relying on teachers and school management to work together so that students would start their new year without any issues next Monday.

"I'd like to urge the heads of schools and the management to work together to ensure that we are ready to receive not only our teachers on the 8th but also all the students to start school," Akbar said.

Akbar said all the 737 primary schools and 173 secondary schools will be open for classes next Monday.
