On the afternoon of September 3, 2018, a "Renovation and Protection of the Hall of Mental Cultivation Ceremony" was held in front of the Hall of Mental Cultivation's gate. After more than two years of preparation, the Hall of Mental Cultivation has officially entered the implementation stage of renovation and protection. The repair area covers an area of about 7,707 square meters and the construction area is about 2,540 square meters.
Shan Jixiang, the director of the Palace Museum, said: The overall renovation and protection of the ancient buildings in the Palace Museum is a great project. By maintaining more areas, more ancient buildings can be opened to the public.
This is a place that experienced numerous events. Emperor Shun Zhi, the second emperor in the Qing Dynasty, died here and Emperor Pu Yi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, abdicated here. The whole renovation and protection of Palace Museum has been going on for 16 years. It will be completed in 2020, the 600th year after its completion by Emperor Yong Le, the third emperor of the Ming Dynasty in 1420.
In the early Qing Dynasty, the Hall of Mental Cultivation was one of Emperor Shun Zhi's bedrooms. Then, Emperor Yong Zheng, the fifth emperor of Qing Dynasty, changed it into his main bedroom and the center of daily administration. It witnessed the major historical events of the Qing Dynasty.
