Inspired by the news that Saransk would be hosting four matches for the World Cup 2018, the local souvenir factory with 28 years of experience decided to produce a line of unique soccer-themed presents for the luxury segment of the market.
Eleven Swarovski balls, the same number as the number of players in a team, are among souvenirs which the shop now offers to wealthy fans.
It takes a team of two Saransk women two weeks to make the metal factory-produced ball glitter. Since the tournament began, only four balls out of the eleven left, and souvenir shop manager Nikolay Kozin told Reuters they are ready to produce more in case there is a high appetite from the fans.
The first ball was bought by a local Mordovian soccer team after they qualified for the Russian premier league. Kozin said if some of the balls did not find owners, he would be glad to place them in a museum as unique World Cup exhibits.
