BEIJING, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The total box office sales on the Chinese mainland in 2019 stood at 64.3 billion yuan (around $9.2 billion), growing by 5.4 percent from the previous year.

The number is now officially the new annual domestic box office record, with the previous record was broken on Dec. 13.

According to the China Film Administration on Tuesday, domestic films grossed 41.2 billion yuan (around $5.9 billion) during the year, a signficant 8.65-percent increase from last year.

In 2019, China produced 1,037 films. Of the 88 films each with box office sales of 100 million yuan, 47 were domestic films, the administration said.
