The Spanish club has become the first side since Bayern Munich in 1976 to win the trophy three years in a row and Zinedine Zidane is the first coach to win three back-to-back titles.

French forward Karim Benzema scored Real's opener while substitute Gareth Bale struck twice, including a sensational overhead kick, to seal a 13th European Cup win overall and their fourth title in five years after Sadio Mane had equalized for Liverpool.

Karim Benzema put Madrid ahead in the 51st minute by sticking out a leg as Liverpool’s German keeper Loris Karius attempted to throw the ball to a team mate, sending it trickling over the line, but Sadio Mane leveled from close range in the 55th for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Substitute Bale then piled more misery on Karius with a long-range strike in the 83rd minute which went straight through the hands of the hapless goalkeeper.

Liverpool’s talismanic forward Mohamed Salah, who scored 44 goals for Liverpool this season, was forced off in the first half with a suspected dislocated shoulder after tangling with Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, while Real defender Dani Carvajal also left the pitch in tears after getting injured before halftime.

Liverpool manager Klopp revealed that Salah's injury was "serious" after the game, "It is a serious injury. He is in hospital for an X-ray. It is either the collarbone or the shoulder itself."

Meanwhile, it may be the last game 33-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo played for Real Madrid, who is the club's all-time top scorer, as he said he would soon make an announcement on his future.

"Right now we need to enjoy ourselves but in the next few days I'll give an answer to the fans who have always been by my side. It was beautiful to be at Real Madrid," the Portugal forward told television network beIN Sports after the game.
