Shanghai has the most restaurants compared to other Chinese cities, according to a report released by the Shanghai Restaurants Cuisine Association.

Released on Monday, the report shows that Shanghai currently has more than 100,000 restaurants. The city also has the highest density of such establishments in the country. In addition, the proportion of catering services at shopping malls stands at 30 percent, also the highest in the country.

The report points out that the overall revenue of Shanghai-based restaurants has increased in recent years, especially during the holiday seasons. For example, around 300 restaurants from 25 major local food companies earned a combined revenue of 3.28 billion yuan during the 2018 Spring Festival, a 9.4 percent increase compared to the previous year.

In addition, many traditional brands have found innovative ways to expand their presence, including crossover cooperation and delivery services, according to the report.

The 2018 China Restaurant Industry Survey Report that was jointly released by the China Hospitality Association and Xinhuanet also shows that Shanghai currently has 93,301 takeaway stores, the most in the nation.

In 2018, 443 catering businesses opened their first stores in Shanghai - 151 of them were the first in the nation while six were the first in Asia or the world, according to data co-released by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce and third-party organizations.
