It's looking like it could be bad news for fans of EDM and standing in large open spaces in obscure parts of Pudong: rumours are rumbling (increasingly loudly) that Shanghai's Ultra Festival might not be going ahead next month. Sorry, party people.
Having made its China debut in Shanghai last year, the EDM festival was set to return on September 8-9. But, according to EDMtunes the festival has reportedly been cancelled – although there has been no official announcement as of yet. Music and culture site Dancing Astronaut has also written about the festival's potential cancellation due to no lineup details or further information being released since tickets went on sale. Some of Shanghai's music industry insiders are also saying it doesn't look good.
On that cheery note, Ultra Beijing is also rumoured to have been postponed for a second time, having originally supposed to have taken place back in June, then September 15-16. However, again, this is just speculation on Reddit and Weibo and there has been no official release on the matter from the Ultra brand itself.
So if these rumours and whispers turn out to be true, it looks like China's EDM fans are going to have to hold off a little while longer before seeing the likes of Afrojack, DJ Snake and everyone's favourite geriatric frat boys The Chainsmokers (all announced for Beijing), as well as possibly some more huge names from the genre, if last year's Shanghai lineup is anything to go by.
Ah well, here are The Chainsmokers and Halsey pumping out one of those basic yet undeniably catchy tunes you all love so much:
