Although the heat has been met with clear blue skies and fluffy white clouds, which have filled the feeds of everyone's WeChat Moments, with temperatures hitting almost 39 C, it's no wonder this stifling season has been dubbed "barbecue mode" by residents who are complaining that they can hardly stand the heat.

The ways Beijing residents keep cool and protect themselves from the sun's harmful rays during hot summers include swimming, wearing sun-block hats, staying in shady areas and using umbrellas.

All over Beijing, people are using various methods to shield themselves from the sun's rays, and not only for the heat or being afraid of getting sunburned, but because in China having tanned skin is traditionally not a desired esthetic trait, particularly for women.

Beginning in June, high temperatures have been a frequent occurrence in the capital. According to a recent report on The Beijing News, by June 28, there have been seven consecutive days of extremely high temperatures. Also, statistics show that there were 11 consecutive days of high temperatures in June of 1952 and 2000. In addition, there were nine high-temperature days in a row from June 24 to July 2 in 1999, said the news report.

As these high temperatures continue to be a more common incidence, health experts suggest that people should be aware, protect themselves from heatstroke and stay hydrated. People who stay in air-conditioned rooms for a long time should open the windows sporadically for ventilation, and the temperature on the air con should not be set too low. In addition, between 11 am and 3 pm, the time of day with the highest temperatures, people should try to stay indoors, according to the experts.
