BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.98 percent, at 3,673.04 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.23 percent higher at 15,147.88 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.26 trillion yuan (about $199 billion), up from 1.1 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to electrical appliances and education posted strong performance, while shares related to sodium-ion battery led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.01 percent to close at 3,459.32 points Thursday.
