Tokyo stocks open higher on US shares' overnight advance, yen's retreat

TOKYO, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday, as tech-linked issues in the United States rallied overnight, with the yen's retreat against the US dollar also contributing to an upbeat market mood.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 180.59 points, or 0.76 percent, from Friday to 24,031.16.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 5.52 points, or 0.32 percent, to 1,740.68.

Iron and steel, real estate and metal product-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.

Markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
