Vietnamese party chief elected as Vietnam President

Hanoi (People's Daily) - Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong was elected the country's president on Tuesday at the 6th session of the 14th National Assembly.

Nguyen Phu Trong was born on April 4, 1944 in the rural district of Dong Anh, the capital city of Hanoi.

He has been a member of the CPVCC's Political Bureau since 1997. He served as chairman of the National Assembly from 2007 to 2011.

He was elected as CPVCC general secretary in 2011, and re-elected as general secretary in 2016.
