HANOI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Customs officers of southern Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh City have seized nearly 26 kg of drugs sent from Germany and the United States, Vietnam News Agency reported on Wednesday.

Upon examining five suspicious parcels sent from Germany to Vietnam, the customs forces found and seized nearly 5.7 kg of synthetic drugs, which were hidden in sweet bags on Nov. 8, according to the news report.

They then examined two other parcels sent from the United States via express parcel delivery services and seized 20 kg of crystal methamphetamine, which were hidden in coffee bags, the news agency said, adding that local authorities are investigating the case.

According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
