An auxiliary police officer was hailed for his heroism on Saturday after rescuing a young girl from a waterlogged car as heavy downpours flooded roads in Gulin county, Southwest China's Sichuan Province.

Kang Anyou waded through treacherous chest-high water toward the floating vehicle, rescued and carried the girl over his shoulders to safety early on Thursday morning.

Kang and four colleagues rescued all six people trapped in the car and received meritorious conduct awards from the county police bureau on Saturday.
