The photo showing Tao at work is the first posted since he was attacked by a former patient in 2020. Netizens welcomed Dr. Tao back to the operation table and praised him for his commitment to his profession.
Tao’s life has been an inspiration to many doctors. At 27, he graduated from Peking University School of Medicine with a doctorate in ophthalmology. He opened a clinic at 31 specializing in uveitis, or diseases that destroy eye tissues and cause vision loss. Six years later, he became a professor and doctoral supervisor.

However, his life took a drastic turn when he was attacked by a knife-wielding man in his clinic on January 20, 2020. His injuries included multiple fractures to his arms, left hand and back, which hindered his work significantly.
His recovery was a dark and frustrating time, but Tao did not give up. He put his energy into mentoring young doctors, scientific research and the development of intraocular fluid exam technology, which can help doctors diagnose diseases from an extracted drop of intraocular fluid.
Tao took up his scalpel again in May to the praise of his supporters. He believes that technology and AI-assisted diagnosis will revolutionize ophthalmology and improve patient outcomes. His right hand has since fully recovered, enabling him to perform complex surgeries with colleagues.
Tao's story is one of resilience and determination. His unwavering commitment to his patients and the medical profession is truly remarkable.
