At least five students have been killed and 29 others injured in a road accident in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, police said Monday.

"The accident occurred when a truck in which some 50 students were travelling was hit from behind by a speeding vehicle on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway near Nagaon village in the state's Kolhapur district," a police official said.

While five students died on the spot in the impact of the crash, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital, he said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official added.
