China will fight "at any cost" and take "comprehensive countermeasures" if the United States insists on its unilateralism and protectionist actions, a spokesperson of China's Ministry of Commerce said Friday.
The statement was made following the US President Donald Trump asked the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) to consider additional tariffs on $100 billion Chinese imports on Thursday.
"Concerning the U.S. statement, we will not only listen to the words but also watch the deeds," the spokesperson said.
"If the US insists on unilateralism and trade protectionist actions regardless of oppositions from China and the international community, China will fight to the end at any cost. New countermeasures will be taken to safeguard the country and the people's interests,”added the spokesperson.
"The trade tensions between China and the US are unilaterally initiated by the US, which is inherently the provocation of the unilateralist act of US to the global multilateralism and US protectionism to global free trade.
"China will continuously broaden reform and opening-up, safeguard multilateral trade mechanism, and promote trade and investment liberalization,” said the spokesperson.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang also made similar pledge when asked to comment on President Trump's direction, according to a statement at the ministry's website.
