A Chinese mainland spokesman said Thursday that any attempt to separate Taiwan from China is doomed to fail.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the comment in response to a question on People’s Liberation Army (PLA)’s live-fire military exercises in the Taiwan Straits on Wednesday and on the remarks of the island's executive head, Lai Ching-te, on "Taiwan independence."

"We resolutely oppose any 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities while all secessionist forces are doomed to fail," the spokesperson said.

No one and no party can underestimate China’s will and power to firmly safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity, added Ma.
