Toronto (People’s Daily) – During the early afternoon hours on Monday in the suburb of North York, eight miles north of Toronto, a white van careened onto a sidewalk, running over pedestrians, eventually killing 9 and injuring 16.
Toronto law enforcement closed all southbound incoming lanes where the tragedy happened and told residents to avoid traveling through the area as an investigation was underway. 
Police have one suspect in custody, but a clear motive has yet to be released. One eyewitness said the incident did not look like an ordinary traffic accident.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences to the victims’ families while on his way to a briefing in Ottawa. 
"Our hearts go out to everyone affected," Trudeau said, adding that he would have more to say later in this evening.

Toronto Mayor John Tory said his office was being updated by the city’s first responders and the acting city manager. 
"My thoughts are with those affected by this incident and the frontline responders who are working to help those injured. I have offered any and all assistance that the city can provide to police to help this investigation,” said Tory.
