President Xi to address opening ceremony of 2018 Boao Forum

Chinese President Xi Jinping will deliver a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Boao Forum for Asia.

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi says the forum’s theme is, "An Open and Innovative Asia for a World of Greater Prosperity."  

The forum will run from April 8 to 11 in the coastal town of China's southern island province of Hainan.

China establishes new immigration agency to meet growing demand

China sets up a new immigration bureau.

It’s part of the government reshuffle plan proposed in last month's National People's Congress.

The move responds to the swelling groups of immigrants to and from China, and strengthens measures to attract global talent.

The bureau is in charge of monitoring visas, employment of foreigners, repatriation of people found to be in the country illegally and border control.

It will further consolidate national security and help China cooperate smoothly with foreign peers on immigration.

S. Korean ex-president Park's sentencing trial to be televised live

South Korean television will air live the sentencing of former president Park Geun-hye on Friday.

The decision is the first of its kind to allow a live broadcast of a trial if it is deemed necessary and of public interest.

Park objected to the live coverage, but the court overruled her request due to the public attention to the trial.

Park has been charged with bribery, abuse of power and a string of other corruption-related charges.

Prosecutors have demanded a 30-year jail term for Park.

Magnitude 6.8 quake hits Bolivia, affects neighboring Brazil, EL Salvador

A powerful earthquake rocks Bolivia.

Measuring 6.8 in magnitude, the quake was felt as far away as Brazil and El Salvador.

It seems to have caused no major damage in the South American nation.

Reports say there were no casualties either.

However in Brazil, people in office buildings in cities like Sao Paulo and Brasilia were seen evacuating in panic.

China pledges to protect freedom of religious belief

China vows continued respect for and protection to its citizens' freedom of religious belief.

A white paper says China adopts policies on freedom of religious belief based on national and religious conditions to protect citizens' right to the freedom of religious belief, build active and healthy religious relationships, and maintain religious and social harmony.

Indonesia declares emergency after oil spill

Indonesia declares an emergency after an oil spill.

The large oil spill around a port on Borneo Island and a fire killed four people over the weekend.

Disaster relief officials were able to control the blaze in the city of Balikpapan but were still working to contain the spill, which started on Saturday and spread over an area of around 12 square kilometers.

China breaks ground with first 5G phone call

And China Mobile and ZTE conduct the first 5G phone call in China.

Reports say terminals will be commercially available by the second half of 2019.

The cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen participated in the 5G trial.

The first 5G phone call was made from Guangzhou.
