China denies dumping steel into Canada.

A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa says  only a tenth of Canadian steel imports come from China.

He says China understands Canada's feelings to avoid the US trade sanctions.

Canada imports most of its steel from the US.


HK tycoon Li Ka-shing announces retirement


Hong Kong business tycoon Li Ka-shing is retiring.

The 89-year-old Hong Kong business icon says he will officially step down as chairman of CK Hutchison and CK Asset.

His eldest son will succeed him. 

Forbes magazine says the elder Li is the richest person in Hong Kong and the world’s 23rd wealthiest individual.


Chinese education minister: five aspects to reduce academic burdens


China's education minister calls for multilateral cooperation to reduce the burden to students.

He says this includes standardizing training institutes and the way students are evaluated.

He suggests that students be assessed by their overall performance and not on grades or scores alone.


Panama becomes first Central American country to ban plastic bags


Panama becomes first Central American country to ban plastic bags.

Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela announced in January that plastic bags would not be allowed in supermarkets, pharmacies or retailers.

The UN says 8 million tons of plastics are dumped into the sea a year, and if this continues, there will be more plastics than fish in the ocean by 2050.


DPRK FM leaves for Sweden

North Korea's foreign minister has arrived in Sweden as the venue for a summit between the leaders of North Korea and the US remains uncertain.

North Korea's Central News Agency says Ri Long-ho will meet his Swedish counterpart to exchange views on bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.

Other reports say Ri is likely to discuss the upcoming talks between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump.

4 confirmed dead in Florida bridge fall, 9 to hospitals


And tragedy strikes South Florida.

Reports say four people were killed by a collapsed pedestrian bridge near Miami.

The Miami-Dude fire chief says nine victims were removed, but did not discuss their conditions.

He says workers will operate under the search and rescue mode after nightfall.
