Xinhua News Agency is China’s state news agency and an international news agency. It was established on November 7, 1931 in Ruijin, Jiangxi province as the Red China News Agency and changed to its current name in Yan’an in January 1937.

Xinhua has more than 200 branches at home and abroad, including seven overseas regional bureaus respectively located in Hong Kong, New York, Brussels, Cairo, Nairobi, Moscow and Mexico City.

Xinhua has established a global news and information collection network, built a multi-lingual, multimedia, multi-channel news and information release system, and formed an all-media group that focuses on news agency and other media services.

First, news agency service. Xinhua provides all-media products round the clock in eight languages (Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, and Japanese) to subscribers on a daily basis, distributing an average of more than 7,000 news items, including text news, photos, charts, audio and visual products.

Second, newspapers and magazines. Xinhua owns China’s largest newspaper cluster of over 20 newspapers and magazines, with a total circulation of more than 6 million copies per issue. Among them are Xinhua Daily Telegraph, Reference News, China Comment, Outlook Weekly, Economic Information Daily, China Securities News and Shanghai Securities News.

Third, economic information service. Xinhua provides economic information service to government bodies and enterprises. Its economic information service system boasts Xinhua Financial, Xinhua Silk Road Information Service, Xinhua Index and Xinhua Credit.

Fourth, TV service. In addition to an audio and video news department, Xinhua has a TV network China Xinhua News Network Corporation (CNC).

Fifth, new media service. Xinhua has established a system to provide news service to online media and owns a cluster of new media terminals. At present, Xinhua’s official website ( and Xinhua’s news apps are maintaining their leading position in China. Its official accounts on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube has more 100 million followers in total.

In recent years, Xinhua has actively pursued innovation by adapting to the development trend of new technologies such as big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and mobile Internet. It has launched a “Xinhua News Cloud” platform, which aggregated resources of broadcast institutions in China and hosts live coverage, a video self-production platform, an intelligent news gathering and editing system called “media brain”, and the world’s first artificial intelligence news anchor. Xinhua has now become a pioneer in media technology innovation globally.

Xinhua has attached great importance to strengthening international exchanges and cooperation. It has initiated the media cooperation mechanism such as BRICS Media Forum and World Media Summit. It has signed cooperation agreement with 166 media organizations in 116 countries and regions, established partnerships with more than 20 UN agencies and signed MOUs with 13 of them. Xinhua has also cooperated with UN agencies to launch charity campaigns worldwide.
