BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- The re-surging calls for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, a stage for winter sports athletes globally, certainly run counter to the Olympic spirit that intends to unite rather than divide.

It is a long-held consensus of the international sports community that boycott is "the most ominous ghost in the Olympic movement." Such malicious calls are based on the groundless allegation of the so-called "genocide" in China and clearly reflect the intention to politicize sporting events.

The Olympic Charter, which governs the organization, action and operation of the Olympic Movement, states that the Games must not be used as a platform for any kind of political, religious, or racial demonstration.

The Olympic Games -- widely regarded as one of the world's greatest celebrations of humanity -- are the exclusive property of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), according to the charter. In this sense, any attempt to use the Olympic Games as a place to advance political agenda is in violation of the Olympic Charter and against the IOC.

It should also be noted that the IOC has approved adding the word "together" into the Olympic motto in July this year, which makes the new Olympic motto read "Faster, Higher, Stronger - Together."

The renewed motto highlights the IOC's goal to use sports as a medium to encourage global solidarity. It serves as a reminder that any boycott calls undoubtedly run counter to the consensus of the international community.

It shouldn't be surprising why so far not a single athlete or National Olympic Committee has withdrawn from the Winter Games. The international sports community have rather sent their best wishes and extended support to the Beijing Winter Olympics.

Susanne Lyons, president of the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee, has said that Team USA's athletes should not be used as "political pawns."

Meanwhile, John Coates, president of the Australian Olympic Committee, has voiced opposition against a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games and reaffirmed that Australian athletes will take part in the event.

It was with the intent to foster peace, brotherhood and fair athletic competition that the creators of the modern Olympics founded the Games.

Under the guidance of the Olympic spirit, China will aim to host a streamlined, safe and splendid Olympic Games for the world and promote the sound development of international sports cause.

At a time when the world is reeling under a pandemic, unseen in a century, and protectionism, solidarity is the need of the hour.

A boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics would not only cripple and disrupt the much-needed solidarity but also serve as a fatuous gesture.
