History has proven that when China and the US have a peaceful and harmonious relationship, both sides win. When bilateral relations turn confrontational, both sides lose. Cooperation is the only choice for both China and the US and also the only path for a brighter future.

China places high value on the trade talks, and always approaches them with great sincerity. China wants a win-win result based on equality and mutual respect. However, the US went against previous commitments by applying extreme pressure and imposing tariffs on Chinese imports. It was a move that cast a shadow over the recent trade talks and caused them to end without agreement. The US is entirely responsible for this latest breakdown.

For the past year, China’s sincerity and goodwill to move trade talks forward have been apparent. The economies of both nations are deeply entwined, and the US tariffs not only harm Americans and the Chinese, but also people of the world. It is the will of the planet that China and the US settle economically and reach trade agreements. Unfortunately, the US decided to ignore the global will.

A smooth economic and trade cooperation between China and the US is the best option, but it must be based on principles. China will not compromise on major principles. It will resolutely defend its core interests and the fundamental interests of its people. China would never trade dignity for benefits. And nobody expects China to make concessions at the expense of its core interests.

China's trade talk door is wide open. It firmly believes that both countries share common interests and there is plenty of room for cooperation in the economic and trade sectors. Washington should take a rational and pragmatic approach to meet China halfway, and let China-US trade serve both peoples and the people of the world.

The world is a diverse place. There is not a world without disagreements. The practice during the past 40 years since China and the US established diplomatic relations has proved that China-US cooperation is determined by the fundamental interests of both sides. It is not changed by the will of a few people. Maintaining bilateral relations is beneficial to both sides and the whole world.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that as long as we observe the principles of mutual respect and equality, shelve differences to seek consensus, and try to resolve them through expanding common ground, we will be able to overcome difficulties and obstacles, and prevent major disruptions in bilateral relations.

Regarding the China-US trade dispute, China's position is clear, consistent and firm. China believes that there is no winner in a trade war. China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid of one.

In general, the Chinese economy is in good shape. China's GDP advanced 6.4 percent year on year in the first quarter (Q1) of this year. In Q1, investment in high-tech manufacturing and services posted vigorous gains of 11.4 percent and 19.3 percent year on year respectively.

China keeps unlocking the huge potential of domestic demand and consumption has played an increasing role in China's economy, contributing 76.2 percent of GDP growth in 2018.

China has the world's most complete industrial system and growing technological innovation capabilities. Besides, China is home to the world's biggest middle-income group.

China has a population of nearly 1.4 billion people. It indicates a huge market potential for consumption. In this case, China will never be short of resilience and potential for further development.

Practice tells us that the more complicated and challenging the situation is, the more we must strengthen our confidence and concentrate on doing our own things. Only by doing this can we calmly deal with various risks and challenges and overcome all difficulties and obstacles.
