As this year marks the 76th anniversary of China-Myanmar diplomatic ties, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing will pay a state visit to China from June 15 to 19.
Through this visit, the two countries are expected to renew the traditional "pauk-phaw" friendship, deepen their comprehensive strategic cooperation, and work to achieve more practical outcomes in building the China-Myanmar community with a shared future.
As the regional landscape undergoes profound adjustments, this high-level interaction continues the millennia-old "pauk-phaw" friendship and deepens the China-Myanmar community with a shared future, serving as an exemplary model for regional peace and development.
Enduring "pauk-phaw" friendship demonstrates the continuity and stability of China's neighborhood diplomacy. "Pauk-phaw," or fraternal brothers, is an exclusive emotional bond between the peoples of China and Myanmar. In the 1950s, China, Myanmar and India jointly initiated the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which have become basic norms of international relations.
Throughout the 76 years of diplomatic relations, regardless of how the international situation has evolved, China and Myanmar have always adhered to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, sharing weal and woe, standing together in times of difficulty, and cooperating in unity.
They have set an example of friendly interaction between nations. From jointly practicing the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence to the historic announcement by the two countries in 2020 to build a China‑Myanmar community with a shared future, China‑Myanmar relations have steadily advanced along the main line of good‑neighborly friendship, without any directional swings caused by external interference.
Deepening mutually beneficial cooperation and jointly safeguarding regional peace and security, China and Myanmar are working together to create high-quality regional public goods, and to practice common development and common security.
Development and security are the core issues of regional governance and cooperation, and they are also the two pillars of China‑Myanmar cooperation.
In the economic field, both sides are deeply engaged in high-quality Belt and Road cooperation through connectivity projects, trade and investment.
China has long been Myanmar's largest trading partner and a major source of foreign investment. This visit will expand cooperation from traditional areas to high-end industries and innovation fields, supporting Myanmar's economic development and regional supply chain stability.
In the security field, upholding a vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security, China and Myanmar have jointly addressed cross-border challenges.
To tackle telecom fraud, cybercrime and smuggling, the two countries, together with Thailand and others, have deepened regional law enforcement cooperation, cracked down on crimes, and achieved remarkable results.
Unlike the acts of certain powers that promote bloc confrontation and create division and turmoil in this region, China‑Myanmar cooperation is problem‑oriented and people‑centered on security, addressing regional governance challenges with practical actions, providing a high‑quality model for cross‑border security governance, and contributing to long‑term regional stability, thus contributing a China‑Myanmar approach to the provision of regional public goods.
China-Myanmar cooperation serves as an positive example for relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN is a priority direction in China's neighborhood diplomacy and a key region for high‑quality Belt and Road cooperation.
China is working with ASEAN countries to build a peaceful, safe and secure, prosperous, beautiful and amicable homeland and to forge a closer China‑ASEAN community with a shared future. Within this grand blueprint, China‑Myanmar cooperation is playing a unique and important role, generating positive spill‑over effects.
In the area of sub‑regional cooperation, China and Myanmar have actively participated in and promoted Lancang‑Mekong cooperation, injecting lasting vitality into the prosperity and stability of the entire Lancang‑Mekong region.
At the regional cooperation level, the two sides have actively participated in and promoted the building of an even closer China‑ASEAN community with a shared future.
This new type of non‑aligned, non‑confrontational, mutually beneficial and symbiotic bilateral relationship between China and Myanmar meets the common aspirations of countries in the region for peaceful development and solidarity, and provides a model for deepening partnership and advancing regional cooperation between China and ASEAN.
The upcoming visit of Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to China is both a reflection on and inheritance of the millennium‑old friendship, and an upgrading and empowerment of the China‑Myanmar community with a shared future in the new era.
In an uncertain world, the stable development of China‑Myanmar relations acts as a solid ballast, injecting certainty, stability and positive energy into a turbulent regional situation.
It also contributes a unique and powerful strength to the building of an even closer China‑ASEAN community with a shared future, and continues to contribute to regional peace, prosperity and global governance progress.
