A fair and just environment for the general election for the seventh-term Legislative Council (LegCo) in China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) concerns the overall interests and the well-being of the Hong Kong people.

However, the opposition camp in Hong Kong, who have been obsessed with the idea of “mutual destruction,” recently eyed the crucial election and have attempted to use it to wrest political power and destroy the peace and stability of Hong Kong.

The HKSAR Basic Law endowed the LegCo with various powers and responsibilities with the purpose of enabling the latter to build Hong Kong, advance the city’s economic development and improve the livelihood of Hong Kong people.

Members of the LegCo ought to fulfill their obligations to defend rule of law and safeguard the HKSAR.

Unfortunately, those opposition politicians who have been obsessed with “mutual destruction” have brazenly started the so-called “primaries” when the nomination hasn’t even begun, scheming to realize their “35-plus” plan, a wild ambition of winning more than 35 seats in the LegCo in the upcoming election in September.

It’s shocking that not a word of their declarations of candidacy was about people’s livelihood or constructive ideas about Hong Kong’s development.

Benny Tai Yiu-ting, a major touter of “mutual destruction” and schemer behind the illegal “primaries,” blatantly claimed that the only thing the opposition wants from the 2020 LegCo General Election is to use the weapons of the ballot tickets in the hands of Hong Kong people to snatch a more powerful weapon.

Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, a major instigator of the riots in Hong Kong, said that the LegCo is an extremely important platform for their protest movements in the future.

In the eyes of these home-grown terrorists, their participation in the LegCo election is not at all for serving the voters and the development of Hong Kong, but only a way to realize their ultimate goal of seizing political power by securing the majority of seats in the LegCo to escalate violent activities of black-clad rioters with the “constitutional weapon.”

Many signs have indicated that external forces have been wantonly interfering in relevant affairs of the general election.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo openly congratulated certain politicians on the results of the “primaries” as soon as they were released. And shortly after that, the US signed the so-called “Hong Kong Autonomy Act” into law and revoked Hong Kong’s “special status” and suspended “preferential treatment” for the city.

By singing a duet with a certain country in such a blatant manner, these opposition politicians have fully exposed their conspiracy to collude with external forces to grab political power and instigate a color revolution.

The purpose of the LegCo election is to elect people who can represent Hong Kong people and work for the well-being of residents of the city, rather than picking a bunch of henchmen of external forces.

At the moment, Hong Kong people should see clearly that they can never elect a LegCo that is committed to “mutual destruction” and sabotaging the development of Hong Kong if they want prosperity for the city and a peaceful life for themselves.

Hong Kong has come to a crossroads. People of the SAR need to save themselves.

Whether the LegCo will become an arena where the opposition camp can stir up troubles willfully or a legislature that truly serves for the welfare of people in the city, the future of Hong Kong is in the hands of every Hong Kong person.
