US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Friday threatened to reassess the special status of Hong Kong after the National People’s Congress of China deliberated on a bill aimed at strengthening the national security of the city. Such an act of interference has once again exposed the hypocrisy of US politicians.

It’s an international convention to make laws protecting national security. The US can testify to that using itself as an example: In 1798, the country passed four laws under the name of the Alien Sedition Act of 1798. Following the September 11, 2001 incident, it issued the USA Patriotic Act and Homeland Security Act of 2002. Today, there are countless bills on national security in the US, covering treason, spying activities, and terrorism. The US has added layers of protection itself, but won’t let China fix a loophole for national security. The US has done everything it could to safeguard its national security but makes carping remarks on other countries’ national security matters.

The US has committed a long list of crimes that violate human rights and infringe on international justice. Because of national security concerns, the US has wiretapped not only officials in foreign countries but also its own citizens. With groundless accusations, the US exercises long arm jurisdiction on foreign enterprises like Huawei. By claiming a test tube filled with white powder was proof of a chemical weapon, the US lied to the world and thrusted Iraq into chaos and turbulence.

It is conventional for China to establish and improve the legal system and enforcement mechanism for Hong Kong to safeguard national security. The safety measures proposed only target some sorts of practices like secession, subversion, terrorism and external interference. These measures are the basics for all countries to safeguard national security, and cannot even rival US national protections.

The greater the opposition by the US, the higher the possibility that the draft bill will hit the Achilles’ heel of opposition factions and anti-China forces. The unrest breaking out in Hong Kong after the local government proposed amending the extradition law has made it clear to the public that the US is the major black hand powering Hong Kong’s chaos. From events such as the meeting of US high-ranking politicians like Vice President Mike Pence and Pompeo with those trying to sow trouble in Hong Kong and China, including Jimmy Lai and Joshua Wong, the US National Endowment for Democracy’s transferring of political black money to opposition factions, the issuing of the so-called Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, and some US politicians’ in-person orchestration of Hong Kong street violence, the US interference and penetration in Hong Kong has gone from behind the scenes to the front desk. The US worked in collusion with the opposition factions to flagrantly undermine Hong Kong’s prosperity and prospects. China’s central government is now decisively making this law, aiming to cut off the interactions of opposition factions with overseas forces and eradicate the source of Hong Kong’s disturbances.

For the part of the US, Hong Kong is only a pawn to contain China, an anti-China bridgehead, a base camp of riots, and an exporter of color revolutions. We need to formally warn those trying to sow trouble in Hong Kong and China at large that a full range of countermeasures are now in place, the central government is taking action, and those who envision achieving their corrupted goals by trumpeting themselves with the help of overseas forces are undoubtedly doomed. Hong Kong citizens are getting closer to the truth, discerning the tricks of instigation played by overseas forces and those trying to sow trouble in Hong Kong and China at large, and will not make themselves the pawns and cannon fodder in political games.

Pompeo’s carping remarks are within our expectations. China is already prepared to forge ahead with the legislation. The US can gain no ground by keeping its logic of imposing double standards and hegemony to China.
