Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, one of the key anti-government figures in Hong Kong and founder of Next Media Ltd, was detained on Friday for participating in an illegal assembly and criminal intimidation. Defying Hong Kong police, Lai and his lackeys brazenly attended unlawful demonstrations on August 31 in 2019, which massively obstructed local transportation and sparked rounds of damaging actions. In June 2017, Lai used abusive words to insult and menace a journalist of the Oriental Daily News on assignment.

Both criminal cases happened in crowded areas. His arrest represents Hong Kong Police's strictness in enforcing the law and shows its lawful governance and intolerance of crimes.

Lai-led radicals have been the scourge of Hong Kong for many years.  Under the guise of so-called freedom of assembly, press and speech, they have colluded with foreign anti-China forces to agitate political conflict and create social division. Their previous crimes have been enough to nail them to the pillar of shame, including sabotaging the principle of "one country, two systems" and making chaos undermining social stability and prosperity.

Lai's two suspected crimes had an extreme and damaging impact. Since the controversial extradition bill, his gangsters deliberately resorted to illegal moves in defiance of law and norms, bringing about huge damage to Hong Kong's economic and social development amid the months-long chaotic situation. During the period, Lai helped plot radical movements and offered financial support. He even used his media to agitate various traitorous political activities while shamelessly begging the US for help.

The case of intimidating the journalist shows his absurd hypocrisy. The media founded by Lai has always used “press freedom” as cover to bluff and cheat. Who is the biggest destroyer and blasphemer of Hong Kong’s “press freedom” while shamelessly intimidating a journalist from other media?

With the outbreak of the COVID-19, Hong Kong’s economic and social situation has worsened. It is hateful that the anti-government figures including Lai are using the epidemic to help their illegal political activities. They continue to instigate the protestors to violence and sabotage in Hong Kong, while inciting medical staff to strike without regard for citizens' lives.
