On the occasion of the coming 32nd Arab League Summit, foreign ministers from member states have agreed to allow Syria to return to the fold after a 12-year suspension, another step in the process of reconciliation in the Middle East.
From the beginning of this year, normalization and reconciliation have become current words in this region. Under the brokerage of China, Saudi Arabia and Iran reached a historical agreement in Beijing and restarted their diplomatic relations. The Yemen peace process is moving in a positive direction. Gulf Cooperation Council countries have normalized relations following the Qatar diplomatic crisis of 2017. Turkey and Egypt have reached a rapprochement.
When talking about normalization in the Middle East and North Africa, pursuing regional security and stability must be mentioned. Since the Second World War, this area has suffered hot and cold wars, and traditional and non-traditional security challenges.
The consensus of pursuing common security has been forming among regional, especially Arab, countries, and the idea that the security of one country should not be based on the insecurity of other countries is acknowledged by more and more regional powers.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine crisis and aggressive US monetary policy, Middle East and North African countries have valued peace and stability as the real basis of development and prosperity. Only by taking peace and development into their own hands can regional countries achieve real prosperity.
Cooperation and solidarity have been instrumental in the development of regional countries and many important regional international organizations have played an important role. In turbulent geopolitics, Middle East and North African countries should and must realize the important value of promoting cooperation and maintaining solidarity.
Moreover, as many political analysts have said, China and other major powers have been pivotal in reconciliation among Middle East and North African countries. The Global Security Initiative initiated by President Xi Jinping lights the way for countries pursuing common security. China has successfully promoted the normalization of relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, providing a strong foundation for the rapid turnaround of relations in the Middle East and North Africa. And more importantly, China has no colonial burden with the Middle East and has maintained fairness and justice for a long time, which is why China deserves the trust of Middle East countries.
The international situation is undergoing profound changes. A peaceful, stable, and solid Middle East and North Africa region, as one of the significant poles on the international map, is not only beneficial but essential for the rest of the world. It is hoped that the countries in the Middle East and North Africa will continue on the road of peace and reconciliation without external interference and make unremitting efforts to realize lasting peace and universal security in the region.
