Chinas National Health Commission and National Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention recently held a virtual meeting themed around technical exchange for COVID-19 prevention and control with the World Health Organization (WHO).The two sides communicated on the current state of the epidemic, medical treatment, acute care and continued vaccination. The two sides agreed to maintain technical exchanges to facilitate early end of the pandemic.China has convened multiple meeting with the WHO on technical exchanges less than a month after it optimized its COVID-19 response measures, which mirrors the countrys sense of responsibility in coping with global public health crisis.China follows a science-based approach in preventing and controlling COVID-19 and has been constantly fine-tuning its response measures in light of the evolving situation.Facing the wide spread of the original strain and the Delta variant, which had high virulence, China took strict measures and earned valuable opportunities for the international community to fight the disease. It has made important contributions to the global COVID-19 fight.Given the significantly weakened pathogenicity and virulence of the Omicron variant, as well as Chinas expanded capacity in treatment, testing and vaccination, the country downgraded its management of COVID-19 from Class A to Class B.This is expected to make COVID-19 response more scientific, targeted and effective, better ensure normal work and life and meet peoples demand for medical services, and reduce the impacts from the disease on economic and social development to the fullest extent. It is generally believed by international personages that Chinas COVID-19 response is based on its understanding of the laws of how the virus evolves and spreads, and mirrors the countrys commitment to seeking truths through scientific approaches.China places people and their lives in the first place and works to ensure their safety and health to...
Kevin McCarthy (Photo: VCG)The US House of Representatives has finally elected Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy as the new speaker early Saturday morning after a historic and embarrassing deadlock and 15 rounds of voting that kept the lower chamber from being fully functional for days after the new Congress convened.Chinese analysts said this proves that the power struggle in Washington is not only between the Democrats and the Republicans, but also among the politicians from the same party, and those American politicians with extreme political stance are becoming increasingly willing to hijack the interests of the whole party and are able to force the majority or the pro-establishment elites to compromise on almost any issue. This will create more uncertainty in Washington into the future, because there is no strong and reliable political leader, neither US President Joe Biden nor former president Donald Trump or new Speaker McCarthy are able to completely unite their own party or to speak with one voice. In the future, the US internal governance will still be a mess and fail to effectively solve economic and social problems, and its foreign policy may swerve into more chaotic and dangerous areas, experts claimed.According to CNBC, in a tense showdown on the House floor in the middle of the 14th failed vote at around 11 pm local time Friday, McCarthy personally confronted Republican Representatives Matt Gaetz of Florida and Lauren Boebert of Colorado.Despite making numerous concessions to win support from the pair and other far right Republicans over the course of the week, they still refused to pledge outright support to McCarthy. They, instead, joined four other Republicans in the 15th and final vote by voting "present," which helped him clinch the gavel by reducing the number of votes he needed to get to a majority. He won with 216 out of 428 possible votes, according to the report. Some observers had contended that far-right politicians supported b...
Long lines are seen back at a train station in Jinan, East Chinas Shandong Province, on December 7, 2022, as China further optimized COVID response and relaxed controls. (Photo: IC)Chinas National Health Commission (NHC) and National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine published the 10th edition of the diagnosis and treatment protocol for COVID-19 on Friday. This is the NHCs first national guiding protocol after China announced to downgrade management of COVID from Class A to Class B from January 8. The 10th edition fully embodies the principle of Class B management for Class B infectious diseases. It lays an important foundation for further scientific and standardized COVID diagnosis and treatment, ensuring the smooth and orderly transition of epidemic prevention and control into a new period after going through its peak.It has been nearly a year since the 9th edition of the diagnosis and treatment protocol for COVID-19 was released. The focus of Chinas epidemic prevention and control has changed from preventing infection to protecting health and preventing severe cases. Prior to this, many hospitals in Shanghai, Beijing, Southwest Chinas Sichuan Province and other places had successively released their own diagnosis and treatment plans to further optimize the clinical process. At the same time, many medical professionals expressed their hope for a nationwide version of the diagnosis and treatment protocol. It should be said that the 10th edition released by the NHC has brought together the strengths of different versions, helping to promote good experiences and practices to the whole country. It has important guiding significance for small cities and remote rural areas.Compared with the previous nine editions, the biggest change in the 10th edition is the shift from prevention to treatment. It has several outstanding features. First, it emphasizes efficiency. For example, according to the new edition, hospitals will no longer ta...
Incoming House Speaker Kevin McCarthy of Calif., holds the gavel on the House floor at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, early Saturday, Jan. 7, 2023. (Photo: AP)BEIJING, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The drama over the U.S. House speakership, which ended in the wee hours of Saturday with Kevin McCarthys winning after 15 rounds of voting, is clear testimony of the failing U.S. democracy. The drama features an unprecedentedly divided and paralyzed Washington, and one of its effects is making it clear to all how undemocratic the American democracy actually is.What started as a political novelty, with the first time in 100 years having a nominee not win the gavel on the first vote, has devolved into bitter partisan battles and endless in-fighting, where there is no shortage of backroom deal-making and shrewd political calculation. It appears to be an astonishing lack of concern and attention to the countrys and peoples best interests. The once-in-a-century political stalemate has made people see the true extent of the failure of the U.S. political system, as well as the fact that the U.S. government is not, or has never been, a government "by the people.""Speaker Kevin McCarthys dream job could turn into a nightmare for the American people," Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement following McCarthys win. "To get the votes, he surrendered to demands of a fringe element of the Republican party."Schumer warned that the concessions McCarthy made to become House speaker "will cause a government shutdown or a default with devastating consequences to our country."Americans, who have already been choked by political polarization and partisan feud, are quite downbeat about how Washington politicians would handle their job after such a rough start in a divided Congress.Public trust in the U.S. Congress has reached an all-time low, with only 7 percent of Americans expressing "a great deal" or "quit...
Photo: CFPChina-Philippines relationship has entered a new stage. On January 4, 2023, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. in Beijing during Marcos three-day state visit to China. This is the first foreign head of state hosted by China in 2023. And this state visit is also President Marcos first trip to China and his first official visit to a non-ASEAN country. At the meeting, President Xi alluded to the thousand-years-long engagement between the two countries, and said that despite the differences in national condition and political system, the two countries share similar goals in its developmental path. The two countries have set agriculture, infrastructure, energy and people-to-people engagement as the fundamental pillars of China-Philippines cooperation. And that China is willing to help and work with the Philippines to advance the development in these areas. The recent years have laid a solid foundation for China and the Philippines. Over the past six years, China-Philippine trade doubled its volume, surpassing $82 billion in 2021. China remained the Philippines largest trading partner for six consecutive years. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, China was the Philippines second largest source of tourism income, an industry that contributed 12.7 percent to the Philippine economy in 2018. A total of 1.74 million Chinese tourists visited the Philippines in 2019, an increase of 38.58 percent from 2018."We have to show and demonstrate to the rest of the world how important the relationship is between the Philippines and China," President Marcos said during the meeting. The most important demonstration from the meeting is how the two countries, despite having sensitive problems and conflicting interests on certain issues, could still work together and insulate the overall development of the relationship from these differences. China and the Philippines do have contentious arguments over the S...
After Novembers contentious midterm elections that saw a change of guard in the House of Representatives from Democrats to Republicans, the new year means a new Congress. Except this year things are a bit complicated: The new Congress cant be sworn in because members-elect cant agree on a speaker. Members need to first elect a speaker in their first session who then administers the oath of office to new members, previous to entering on any other business. Without a speaker, the third-highest constitutional officer in the US, the House of Representatives is not essentially useless - it is completely useless. The House cant pass bills or resolutions, cant oversee the federal government, cant pay its members or staff, and incumbent members have even lost their security clearance. That is to say that Congress, e.g., a sub-branch of the federal government, is now not involved in sensitive military and intelligence matters. The US has not seen a situation like this in more than a century, and this time its brought on by Republicans loyal to former President Donald Trump. Instead of toeing the party line and voting in leader Kevin McCarthy, MAGA Republicans are refusing to vote for him. Theyre even holding out despite the fact that, reportedly, McCarthys team has conceded to every single one of their demands.Given that, and the fact that Trump-aligned Republicans are notoriously radical in their political activity, McCarthys odds of winning through attrition seem minuscule. At the same time, Republican holdouts havent nominated any serious candidate instead of McCarthy, so they dont appear to be organized enough to manage a replacement. And then theres the chance that moderate Republicans could join with Democrats to nominate a coalition speaker - however, political polarization is so rampant in Washington that this is extremely unlikely. In essence, the spectre of Trump has jammed up the government. His loya...
On Tuesday, the Guardian published an editorial titled "The Guardian view on Chinas Covid crisis: zero preparation." The editorial asserted that "Its big mistake was neither initially pursuing a zero-Covid policy nor lifting it - others did so and kept mortality rates low - but shifting without warning, much mitigation or, apparently, preparation."It is an extremely irresponsible behavior to comment on such a major policy as the epidemic prevention measures of other countries without any in-depth investigation and research. As a matter of fact, the Guardians statement itself is undoubtedly a continuation of the practice of the British mainstream media in recent years - trying every means to defame and slander Chinas politics, economy, society, and culture. The UK is probably one of the least qualified countries to evaluate Chinas anti-epidemic policy, because as a country with a population of 66 million, the UKs anti-epidemic work in the past three years has been extremely poor. The successive epidemics have generated complaints from the public in the UK.Gao Jian, a scholar at Shanghai International Studies University, told the Global Times that in fact, from the beginning to the end, the understanding of the problem-solving on the pandemic in the UK is completely different from Chinas. But what surprised us in particular, is that throughout the fight against the epidemic, we have clearly seen how social Darwinism is practiced in the UK. In the early days of the epidemic, according to former UK prime minister Boris Johnsons chief adviser Dominic Cummings, thousands of people died needlessly as a result of government mistakes in the handling of the coronavirus pandemic. This is the basic attitude of the current British elite - viewing peoples lives as almost worthless. This also reflects that the social culture, social structure, and governance philosophy of China and the UK are completely different. There is ...
Can you imagine what is killing the most children in the US?Firearms, apparently. They have surpassed motor vehicles as the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the worlds richest nation, according to researchers at the University of Michigan analyzing new federal data in April. President Biden lamented in a tweet, "Over the last two decades, more school-age children have died from guns than on-duty police officers and active duty military combined."Not just numbers, but someone lovedThese are young precious lives lost for no purpose at all. Jakhi Snider, 16, was fatally shot in a vehicle in Southeast Washington on November 27, 2022. On the same day, a 12-year old died in a shooting in Atlanta, Georgia and all the injured were reported to be aged between 15 and 21. Darius King Grigsby, nine months old, was brutally taken away from his family in a drive-by shooting a few weeks ago while being walked by his mother down a street in Merced, California.Alexzandria Bell, a bright and energetic sophomore less than a month away from her 16th birthday, perished in a shooting at her school; the incident also killed 61-year-old educator Jean Kuczka, who heroically put herself between the gunman and her students. The killer, 19-year-old Orlando Harris, opening fire with an AR-15-style rifle with more than 600 rounds of ammunition, died in hospital after an exchange of gunfire with the police.Sadly, they are but the tip of the iceberg. In 2022, 989 children (aged 0-11) and 5,127 (aged 12-17) teens died as a result of gun violence, according to Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit based in the US.Sermon on the Mount? The Second Amendment, often hailed as the Sermon on the Mount by those who see it as an embodiment of American liberty and democracy, was created by the nations forefathers to allow ordinary individuals the capacity to protect themselves. Little did they suspect that their good intentions would go on to cause a malaise in American...
Yiwu, a city in East Chinas Zhejiang Province, is dubbed the "worlds capital of small commodities." (Photo by Gong Xianming/Peoples Daily Online)In the face of profound changes and a pandemic both unseen in a century, the city still delivered a great performance in trade. In the first 11 months of 2022, Yiwu reported total foreign trade of 442.22 billion yuan ($64.48 billion), up 24.1 percent year on year. In particular, its exports grew 19.1 percent from a year ago to 399 billion yuan and imports grew 104.6 percent to 43.16 billion yuan.Foreigners buy umbrellas at the Yiwu International Expo Center, Yiwu, East Chinas Zhejiang Province, November 24, 2022. (Photo by Gong Xianming/Peoples Daily Online)The Yiwu China Commodities City, a global center for the circulation, information and display of small commodities, celebrated its 40th anniversary last November. At the entrance of the market, a series of bestsellers over the past four decades are displayed, including toy frogs that were extremely popular in the 1980s, enamel cups in vogue in the 1990s, as well as selfie sticks and fidget spinners that became trendy in the 2010s.These bestsellers explain how the market maintains its vitality by following trends, making innovations and selling them to the world.Guo Zhenrong, chairman of Lanyu Digital Technology, a tech firm in Zhejiang Province, told the Peoples Daily that he came to Yiwu years ago with a new digital textile printer the firm had developed, which was able to directly color cross-stitch products.Soon, digitally dyed cross-stitch products overwhelmed the market. Within half a year, the technology was employed by 46 enterprises, who saw their output value increase by 300 percent and their rate of profit hit 200 percent."Ive come to Yiwu ...
The vestiges of international travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic will ebb on Jan 8 with China set to open up to the world again. Since the worlds second-largest economy and the biggest manufacturing power is essential to global economic stability, the news of China opening up to the world, once again, hit the headlines all over the world.SHI YU/CHINA DAILYThe news has raised speculation that the world will return to win-win trade and economic development with China returning to full capacity production in the factories, farms and general services. In the almost three years of travel restrictions, global trade and tourism have suffered immeasurably, making the revival of the global economy a big challenge. But with the main driver of global growth back on the global economic stage, expectations of a full-scale worldwide recovery are rising. In fact China is still expected to contribute to about 30 percent of the global growth in 2022 and 2023 based on indicators of inflation-adjusted estimates. This shows that Chinas absence from the global economic stage for a long time has left a yawning vacuum, and its return to the stage has come as a big relief. In February 2019, The Economist magazine said: "Since 2012 China has been the worlds biggest source of tourists. Chinese travellers racked up nearly 150 million trips abroad last year. Their spending — over $250 billion in 2017 — far outstrips that of their American counterparts."In so many ways, China demonstrated it is committed to protecting peoples lives and health by implementing strict measures to contain the pandemic. Even though the pandemic struck without warning, China picked up the gauntlet and fought back courageously. The quick, split-second strategies and steps encouraged the world to fight the virus and, in the end, achieve victory.China first ordered the lockdown of Wuhan in 2020. The move was followed by the implementation of strict prevention and control measures...
Editors note: Decision Makers is a global platform for influential leaders to share their insights on events shaping todays world. Meifang Zhang is Chinas consul general in Belfast. The article reflects the authors opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.China is in the midst of adjusting its response measures around the COVID-19 virus and its variants after a comprehensive assessment of the pandemic situation. This in itself should not be alarming, but encouraging, uplifting even, as any body of government led by responsible leaders will amend its approaches with new information, new conditions. It is the sign of good leadership, especially when applied with good science. What does this updated version of measures look like? And why is it receiving so much attention from the West and its media apparatus? Let us address these separately, as the answers and motives thereof require such. This adjustment of response measures includes:The reclassification of the virus to a Class B instead of the more serious Class A infectious diseases, and the management thereof in accordance with the law;The dropping of testing requirements for travelers upon arrival to China as well as previous quarantine requirements for those that test positive while in the country; In general, a shifting of focus from stemming infections to preventing severe cases and further minimizing the impact of COVID-19 on economic and social activities. These adjustments are consistent with Chinas science-based approach toward governance throughout the pandemic, one aligned with its national conditions. As with all nations, China knows best its capabilities and capacities in service to its people. Measured approaches have been taken throughout the pandemic accordingly. New measures are now being put into effect because of new national conditions, such as the improvements in understanding of the virus and increased capacity to ensure healthy and safe traveling. Moreover, vaccine p...
The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) agreement took effect for Indonesia on January 2, which means the free trade pact has taken effect for 14 of its 15 members so far.Photo taken on Dec. 7, 2022 shows a busy scene at a container terminal of the Lianyungang Port in East Chinas Jiangsu Province. (Photo by Geng Yuhe/Peoples Daily Online)This fully indicates the huge appeal and vitality of the RCEP will inject new impetus into regional economic integration. As the worlds most promising free trade area covering the largest population and boasting the most diverse membership, the RCEP has released constant dividends through tariff reduction and expanding market access over the past year.It has facilitated the free flow and efficient gathering of the factors of production, made closer the trade and investment cooperation among its members, and contributed to higher- and deeper-level regional economic integration. The trade pact has injected strong positive energy into the prosperous development of the region and even the world at large, and brought tangible benefits to enterprises and people.According to statistics, the exports of Korea and Singapore to other RCEP members grew by 18.7 percent and 19.1 percent in the first half of 2022, respectively. In the first nine months of 2022, the trade volume between Thailand and other RCEP members increased 10.1 percent year on year.Auramon Supthaweethum, head of the Department of Trade Negotiations under Thailands Ministry of Commerce, said the most obvious benefit of the RCEPs implementation is that the trade pact has boosted trade between its members and further facilitated regional economic integration.Indonesian Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan noted the RCEP is expected to increase technology transfers and boost the development of supply chains in the region by expanding exports of goods and services.Despite the fluctuations in global investment, most RCEP members have seen rapid growth ...
China, enhancing the construction and coordination of its medical resources, has taken a series of detailed measures to protect its peoples lives and health to the fullest extent. The country has converted nucleic acid testing booths into temporary "fever clinics" and launched expansion programs for first-aid centers. It has mobilized hundreds of key enterprises to keep improving the production and supply of major medical materials and guided them to precisely distribute the materials in accordance with infection peaks in different regions. It has also worked to guarantee the prevention and control needs of key regions and high-risk groups.China has adapted its prevention and control protocols to the evolving situation, coordinated COVID-19 response and economic development in a science-based manner, and shifted its focus from preventing infections to ensuring peoples health and preventing critical cases. The adjustment is scientific, timely and necessary. However, some media outlets in the West, turning a blind eye to the facts and ignoring science, viciously defamed the adjustment in Chinas COVID-19 response, which completely deviates from the professional ethics of journalism and has no credibility at all.COVID-19 is a major test for every country. Since its outbreak, China has always followed the principle of putting people and their lives above everything. It has gathered all available resources to protect the life and health of every Chinese citizen, withstanding rounds of resurgences and successfully getting over the toughest time. The country has issued nine editions of prevention and control plans and diagnosis and treatment plans, which has helped it avoid the widespread infections of the original strain and the Delta variant, which are relatively more pathogenic than the other variants. As a result, the numbers of critical cases and deaths have been significantly reduced, and the country has won valuable time in vaccination and medici...
While it has become common to see Western media outlets blame Chinese supply chain problems partially for the sluggish stock performance of Tesla and Apple, it may be time for the two US giants to face up to the challenges of a more competitive Chinese market.(File photo: Xinhua) Tesla on Monday reported record production and deliveries for 2022. The electric vehicle giant made 1.37 million cars in total last year, up 47 percent year-on-year, with deliveries up 40 percent to 1.31 million. But the numbers still missed Wall Street estimates, which is likely to lead to more pressure for Teslas stock. Teslas share price plunged 65 percent in 2022, losing nearly 37 percent in December alone and marking its worst year since going public in 2010.Meanwhile, Apples share also experienced a rare fall over the past year, plummeting by about 27 percent to $130 per share. Analysts generally project Apples net profits to tumble more than 8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2022, which would break a 14-quarter revenue growth streak, according to media reports. While there are different reasons behind the sluggish stock performance of Tesla and Apple, one thing they have in common is that they both have considerable production capacity in China. This has led some Western media outlets to attribute slowing business growth to local production disruption due to the epidemic outbreaks in China, which apparently misses the point.Take Teslas Shanghai Gigafactory as an example. Production at the Shanghai plant was indeed affected by the COVID-19 outbreak during the first half of 2022. But that impact was short-lived and limited compared with the whole of year production. The annual output of Teslas Gigafactory in Shanghai is estimated to surpass 800,000 in 2022, ranking first among Teslas factories worldwide, according to media reports.Indeed, for those concerned about Teslas performance in China, production may be the least of their worries. What'...

For the eighth consecutive year, its grain harvest topped 650 billion kilograms.China has always put the people and people’s lives first. Following a science-based and targeted approach, it has adapted its COVID response in light of the evolving situation to protect the life and health of the people to the greatest extent possible.Last year, the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games concluded with a resounding success. Shenzhou-13, Shenzhou-14, and Shenzhou-15 soared into the space. Chinas space station was fully completed.None of these achievements would have been possible without the sweat and toil of th...
HONG KONG, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Britain should decouple from the United States when it comes to China and develop a more constructive relationship with China, according to an opinion piece recently published by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).File photo: CFPBritish Prime Minister Rishi Sunaks first foreign policy statement in November last year differed in tone from his predecessor, Liz Truss, who was expected to label China "a threat," the article said.Sunak said Britain must recognize the role China plays in global affairs and favored engagement over Cold War rhetoric, according to the article.Sunak will tread a fine line, with the right wing of his party pushing for a more combative stance, the article argued. But there is every reason for Britain and China to find a way to cooperate, the article said, as "the two countries have long-standing links, including in business, culture, sport, education and tourism.""Britain would be well-advised to also develop its own, distinct policy," it concluded. "There should be room for Sunak to bring a better, more constructive relationship with China."

After earning a PhD, he started his career at the University of Cambridge and then moved on to the UN system. His current interests lie in global development and Sino-U.S. links. The article reflects the authors opinions and not necessarily the views of CGTN.In recent years Americas economic and technological decoupling against China, along with subsequent pandemic disruptions, inaugurated a reordering of global supply chains and harmed many other economies.Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed strong confidence about Chinas economy in his New Year address to ring in 2023 on December 31 evening. He summarized how the Chinese economy is enjoying "strong resilience, tremendous potential and great vitality," since the fundamentals sustaining the countrys long-term growth have remained strong. Chinese economy demonstrates strong resilienceThe U.S. has sought to persuade countries to reduce their dependence on China, via "friend-shoring" by shifting production and trading chains from China to like-minded partners sharing a similar politics, ideology and values, especially Chinas Asian neighboring economies. Some companies have moved their production lines out of China and into other countries, either to sidestep tariffs or avoid future upheavals as relations between the U.S. and China deteriorate.Nonetheless, the economic impact over the threat of decoupling and deglobalization on the Chinese economy wont succeed. The U.S.-led decoupling or "friend-shoring" has served to deepen Chinas links with its Asian neighboring economies, given the complex nature of manufacturing processes that require a dizzying numbers of Chinese-made components and several stages of assembly. The years since the Sino-U.S. trade battle took off in 2018 observe the outsize gro...
