The Caohai national nature reserve in Weining, a Yi, Hui and Miao Autonomous County in Guizhou Province, is one of the most important habitats where the black-necked cranes spend winter.

Between about November to March or April, a great number of black-necked cranes come to Caohai.

The black-necked crane, a bird under the first class protection in China, is the only crane that lives and breeds on plateaus.
