The geological park was approved as a Global Geopark by the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its 209th session in 2020.

In summer, mountains in Zhangye Geopark show undulating contours with changing gorgeous natural hues.

Staggered beddings are distinct with shades of the downs.
